Thrilling trailer for South Korean disaster film, 'The Tower'

We haven't had a really good building disaster movie here in America for a very long. I'm talking something akin to The Towering Inferno, where a small group of people attempt to survive the distraction of a single structure. I guess Roland Emmerich comes close, but he's more interested in destroying the planet. The Tower looks like it may harken back to those old films, and of course it comes to us from another great South Korean filmmaker.

Directed by Kim Ji-Hoon, who helmed the excellent May 18 and Sector 7, the film features a large cast of characters attempting to survive the destruction of the 108-story Tower Sky building on Christmas Day. Along with some excellent visual effects work and well-staged action, it looks to have a healthy amount of poignancy to go along with it as heroes emerge to save the day. The film opened on Christmas Day in South Korea to the second largest debut in their history. Is there any reason why it can't at least do similar business here as something like The Raid: Redemption?

Starring Sol Kyung-gu, Kim Sang-kyung and Son Ye-jin, The Tower has yet to gain a U.S. release date but hopefully that will change soon.
