3. Side Effects
Although it's not quite the grand finale some might expect to cap off Steven Soderbergh's career, Side Effects is a taut and puzzling erotic thriller that shows his utmost professionalism and consistent dedication to his craft.
2. Warm Bodies
The most entertaining version of Romeo & Juliet you're likely to see, Warm Bodies is a zombie romance sweet enough to melt the coldest heart. The script is funny and clever enough to freshen up two genres that sorely need it, while Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer make for a gorgeous pair, even though one is a rotting corpse.
1. Beautiful Creatures
The next great YA franchise! With a pair of truly charming young leads surrounded by an impressive group of veteran actors, Beautiful Creatures makes for an intriguing blend of fantasy, teen romance, and social commentary. Set in the deep South, wonderfully rendered by director Richard LaGravanese, the film has a texture and mood all its own. It's good enough to make us forget all about those boring Twilight kids.
DVD Pick of the Week: Skyfall
Was there any doubt? I've called Skyfall the best James Bond film ever, thanks largely to the smart and stylish direction of Sam Mendes, who brings the iconic super spy roaring into the present with his most personal mission yet.
