First trailer for 'The Past' from 'A Separation' director Asghar Farhadi

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi has been earning awards on the international scene since his very first film, Dancing in the Dust. But it wasn't until his tough family drama A Separation that he made a splash in the United States as well, earning an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. Now he's back with his next effort, The Past, and it looks like another significant work that may have Farhadi taking home some gold yet again.

The first trailer has been released, and while it's in French minus subtitles, the mood is heavy and a little seductive thanks to the score. Starring The Artist's Berenice Bejo, Tahar Rahim of A Prophet, and Ali Mosaffa, the story follows the domestic troubles of an Iranian husband and his French wife. After he deserts his wife and kids to return home, she pleads for a divorce, causing him to come back and see that she's taken up with another man.

There's no U.S. distribution in place yet, but the film is expected to turn up at Cannes.
