If it feels like Neill Blomkamp's Elysium has been "coming soon" for a long time, that's because it has. After the director's impressive debut with District 9, his follow-up has had a lot of eager eyes on it, but a last second decision to bump the release date from March to this summer. The result is that buzz has quieted considerably even thought it features the likes of Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.
The marketing machine is beginning to pick up now, though, with the release of two new images giving us another glimpse of a cybernetically-enhanced Damon along with a look at co-stars Alice Braga and Wagner Moura. Set in the not too distant future, Earth has become an overpopulated, diseased wasteland, drained of nearly all of its resources. While the poor are left to struggle and suffer, the rich have escaped to Elysium, a space station where illness is non-existent and they can live in the lap of luxury. Damon plays a regular guy who must get to Elysium to save his own life, and in the process change the social order. It's another high concept sci-fi tale from Blomkamp, who also wrote the script. Also starring Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, and Diego Luna, Elysium will finally land in theaters on August 9th. Will we see it at Comic-Con before then?
