'Godzilla' adds 'Happy-Go-Lucky' star Sally Hawkins

The cast of Gareth Edwards' Godzilla relaunch barely resembles what one would expect from your average blockbuster. With Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Juliette Binoche, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, David Strathairn, and Ken Watanabe on board, it suggests that the aims are higher than merely having the iconic movie monster smash through buildings and destroy cities. Adding to the list of refined actors to join the ensemble is Happy-Go-Lucky and Never Let Me Go star Sally Hawkins.

Details remain mostly under wraps, and that includes information on who the cast will be portraying, but Olsen has previously stated that this Godzilla will be a bit darker in tone...

Olsen: "Godzilla‘s actually going to be a very heavy drama… it’s definitely going to be a different take on the past Godzillas."

So that explains the need for a cast that can do more than just run away and scream at the top of their lungs. The multi-cultural nature of the roster also hints at some sort of worldwide disaster that force nations to work together and come to a solution. It's all just speculation until plot details begin to emerge.

Godzilla hits theaters on May 16th 2014.
