Fans who had been clamoring for a return to Sam Raimi's cult horror classic The Evil Dead backed it up with their wallets by catapulting the remake past G.I. Joe: Retaliation and into the top spot. The opening weekend total already places it at the top of the franchise, and sets the stage for already-announced sequel plans that will coincide with an Army of Darkness follow-up. Without the immediate, long-running recognition of A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th, Evil Dead had to rely strongly on enthusiastic word-of-mouth, and an effective ad campaign that promised "the most terrifying film you will ever experience".
2. G.I. Joe: Retaliation- $21.1M/$86.7M
The $300M haul of 2009's G.I. Joe film was split evenly among domestic and foreign audiences, but it's starting to look as if the sequel will be weighted much differently. While the film got off to a decent start here in the States, the second week drop-off indicates numbers that could fall a little short of the previous total. Internationally it's faring much better on a nearly 2 to 1 scale, which is probably why Paramount was so quick to begin work on another sequel.
3. The Croods- $21.1M/$125.8M
4. Jurassic Park 3D- $18.2M
The bloom is long off the rose on these 3D re-releases, and the chance to see Steven Spielberg's twenty year-old hit with a few bells and whistles wasn't enough to change that. Clocking in at less than last year's Titanic re-do, probably the best thing Universal will take from this is at it serves as good hype for Jurassic Park 4.
