Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler Reunite for 'Rocky' Spinoff 'Creed' with Sylvester Stallone

There probably weren't many who were clamoring to see a Rocky 7, but a continuation of the Italian Stallion's story is happening, albeit in a form nobody would have expected. Those who have been following the momentous success of Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's Oscar Grant biopic, Fruitvale Station, know that they formed a special bond while telling the tragic true life story. And it appears they're more than willing to work together again on another film that explores issues of race and social class, only it will be in a Rocky spinoff centered on the grandson of his chief rival, Apollo Creed.

Coogler will direct and co-write Creed, with Jordan in talks for the lead role. And yeah, Sylvester Stallone will be back as Rocky Balboa, who has long since retired from the sweet science. The script co-written by Aaron Covington has Jordan as Creed's grandson, who has been living the life of luxury thanks to his grandfather's success. But he has a natural talent for boxing, and over his family's wishes decides to take up the sport, seeking out a reluctant Rocky for guidance. It'll be interesting to see how Coogler works Apollo Creed's heroic final fight against Ivan Drago into the story.

While many will probably look at this as a terrible idea, it's a passion project for Coogler in much the same way Fruitvale Station was. That should be reason enough to be intrigued, as it suggests this won't just be another light-hearted sports movie. Plus, we can probably all agree that this is a better option than watching Rocky lace up the gloves one more time. [Deadline]
