Ted Melfi Takes Over 'Going In Style' Remake

For his directorial debut, the upcoming St. Vincent De Van Nuys, Ted Melfi attracted a phenomenal cast of Bill Murray, Naomi Watts, Melissa McCarthy, and Chris O'Dowd. Not too shabby, and apparently New Line Cinema took notice of his talent-drawing expertise, because they want him to helm their remake of 1979 heist comedy, Going in Style, which already has some big names circling it.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone director Don Scardino had been attached but the failure of that comedy forced New Line to change their minds. Melfi now moves behind the camera, having already penned the script for the film which centers on three bored senior citizens who decide to rob a bank. Comedy legends George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg starred in the original, a pretty tough act to follow, to say the least. But the remake is attracting a lot of attention as Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin, and Michael Caine were eying the lead roles back when Scardino was on board. There's little reason to think they would change their minds now with Melfi on board.

We should hear more official word on casting soon. Assuming everything went well the first time I wouldn't be shocked if Melfi reached out to Bill Murray. [THR]
