Remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds' Finds a Director

The films of Alfred Hitchcock have been subject to many remakes over the years, and for the most part they've been bad ideas. That hasn't stopped them from happening, of course, and a few years ago we learned that Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes was prepping a remake of Hitchcock's classic horror, The Birds. Well now that film has just left the nest and is about to take off as a director has been found.

THR reports Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Rooijenhas come aboard to direct a reimagining of The Birds, with the most recent version of the script coming from Jonathan Herman. Naomi Watts had been set for the role made famous by Tippi Hedren in the 1963 film, but she read the tea leaves and is no longer involved.

Van Rooijenhas doesn't have much of a profile here in America, but wrote and directed the Dutch TV series that would be remade here as the short-lived ABC drama, Red Widow. So this begs the question: Would you rather Michael Bay direct The Birds, or some guy you've never heard of? This movie is going to happen whether we like it or not.
