Sequel to Denzel Washington's 'The Equalizer' Already in the Works
It's crazy to think that Denzel Washington has never done a sequel ever in his storied career, but it's true. But as he's been making more standard action flicks of late, it was only a matter of time before it happened. Sony, apparently feeling good about test audience reactions to The Equalizer, have decided to push ahead with a sequel, seven months before the first film opens.
The Wrap reports Sony has hired back writer Richard Wenk to pen the follow-up, with Washington expected to return assuming a deal can be worked out. Despite a troubled production that saw a revolving door of directors before Antoine Fuqua took over, Sony is confident the film will be a hit. Based on the 1980s TV series, it stars Washington as a former intelligence agent who atones for a murky past by helping those in need. Chloe Moretz co-stars as a prostitute seeking Washington's help, with Melissa Leo, Bill Pullman, and Marton Csokas filling out the cast.
With The Equalizer boasting the highest test scores for any R-rated film in Sony's history, perhaps their enthusiasm is warranted. We'll find out when the film opens on September 26th.
