Warner Bros. to Build a 'Minecraft' Film with 'The LEGO Movie' Producer

Warner Bros. obsession with blocks isn't going away any time soon. The studio, having just won the hearts of millions with The LEGO Movie, has now picked up the rights to popular block-building video game, Minecraft, to develop into a feature film.

Not surprisingly, The LEGO Movie producer Roy Lee is on board for what will apparently be a live-action version of the game, which recently surpassed 100 million registered users. The game was created by Markus Persson (his confirmation of the news here) and fully released to the public in 2011. The game presents an addictive open world where players build using special cubes or blocks, giving them the ability to construct just about anything they want. If you've been a comic convention lately you'll probably seen cosplayers walking around with giant Minecraft heads and swords.

There's "huge interest" from writers and directors for this one which, again, shouldn't come as a surprise given what The LEGO Movie was able to accomplish. [Deadline]
