Marc Webb Talks Villain Overload Concerns in 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

It tends to happen in superhero sequels that, in an attempt to make everything bigger than before, there will be an overloading of villains for the hero to contend with. I remember those concerns popping up way back in Batman Returns, and that was just with Catwoman and Penguin running around. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 had the same problem, one of many problems as it turns out, but Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has even more bad guys.

With Jamie Foxx's Electro, Dane DeHaan's Green Goblin, Paul Giamatti as the Rhino, plus villainous turns for Chris Cooper, B.J. Novak, and the ever present threat of OsCorp, that's an awful lot of villainy for one movie. Webb has heard your concerns, and during an interview with THR at SXSW, he told fans not to worry and that his film won't fall into the same trap as the previously mentioned movies...

Webb: “It's about writing. We're aware of those movies and the complaints people had. The main villain is Electro. Every other villain emerges around that. We were careful to make sure the stories entertained. You had to make sure to create obstacles that were difficult to overcome. We wanted to make the physical and emotional obstacles difficult. Rhino is in it for four minutes so it's a legitimate comparison, but when you see the movie, I'm confident.”

To be fair, having a ton of villains is to be expected considering the franchise's build to a Sinister Six movie, but it's good to know that Webb and Sony are being careful.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2nd 2014.
