Confusion Over Evangeline Lily's 'Ant-Man' Role Resolved; Fate of Janet Van Dyne Revealed

What the heck is up with you, Marvel? There has been a great deal of confusion who the heck Evangeline Lily is playing in Ant-Man. Over the weekend during their Comic-Con presentation, she was introduced on stage as Hope Van Dyne, even though many sites kept saying she was Hope Pym, a fact which kind of blew my mind because they clearly weren't paying attention. But then I started to question my own sanity (and considered buying a hearing aid) when Marvel's press release seemingly confirmed her as Hope Pym, the alternate universe daughter of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne aka The Wasp. But now this silly little thing has taken one more turn and I feel good and vindicated.

According to Marvel's Ryan Penagos, Lily's role is indeed that of Hope Van Dyne, but she remains the daughter of Hank and Janet. The fact that she uses Jane's last name suggests some tension with her father,  and according to Douglas in an interview with EW, it all has to do with his discovery of Pym Particles...

Douglas:  "My name is Dr. Henry Pym. I’m an entomologist. I’m also a physicist and I discovered in 1963, a way, a serum to reduce a human being to the size of ant maintaining the strength. Not only that, but I was able to find a way to communicate with the ants. But unfortunately during this process, a tragic personal accident happened with my wife, my daughter, Evangeline, Hope. So I’ve had to pass my powers and strengths onto a mentor."

So it sounds like Janet, who in the comics is a founding member of The Avengers as the Wasp, will die and her death causes a rift between father and daughter. Sounds like Lily is being set up to play Wasp in a future film, doesn't it? Maybe that explains why they chose the Lily for the role rather than the previously-rumored Rashida Jones.  Directed by Peyton Reed and starring Paul Rudd, Ant-Man opens July 17th 2015.
