A Remake of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' is on the Way for Some Reason

The '90s were a great time, especially if you were fans of the hot young stars who seemed to be in everything. Not only were you treated to great teen comedies like Can't Hardly Wait, but there was also a pair of big horror franchises that redefined the genre for awhile. Of course there was Scream, but maybe half a rung below it was I Know what You Did Last Summer. Starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, the 1997 film spawned a theatrical sequel a year later, and a terrible straight-to-DVD movie in 2006. But a franchise is a franchise, and so there's a remake on the way.

Mike Flanaga, co-writer and director of this year's horror film, Oculus, has been hired to pen the script for I Know what You Did Last Summer. He'll be adapting Lois Duncan's 1973 book which centered on four teens who accidentally kill someone and dispose of the body, while making a pact to never speak of it again. That is until they're stalked by a mysterious serial killer who claims to know exactly what they did last summer.

The big problem will be finding a way to make this film relevant after years of it being the subject of parody. We saw that Scream 4 couldn't do it just three years ago, and I Know what You Did Last Summer could face a similar fate.
