These Characters May Appear in DC's 'Aquaman' Movie; Jason Momoa Talks About the Role

The king of the seas is finally confirmed to get his own movie in 2018, and after playing coy for months Jason Momoa is confirmed to dive into the role of Aquaman. It's just one part of Warner Bros. and DC's ambitious slate of films all the way through 2020 that will see a number of characters introduced on the big screen. In the case of Aquaman, he doesn't have quite the same "rogue's gallery" as Superman, Batman, or the Flash, but what few he does have may be appearing in the movie.

According to The Aquaman Shrine, the other characters appearing in Aquaman will be his wife Mera, his arch-nemesis Black Manta, and villainous half-brother Orm aka Ocean Master. Basically all of the most important characters in the Aquaman comic and the ones we would expect to see. Also included may be the Trench, a cannibalistic race of sea creatures. Of these, Black Manta is probably the most recognizable due to his appearances on the Superfriends cartoon, sporting his black suit with the giant bug-eyed helmet. In the comics he's known for having murdered Aquaman's son. Mera isn't Atlantean-born like Aquaman, but she is an alien capable of breathing underwater and has helped her husband on numerous occasions. Aquaman's relationship with Orm is a little bit like the one between Thor and his brother Loki. Orm holds a jealous grudge against Aquaman because he feels it should be him as Atlantis' ruler.

Keep in mind that just because they call themselves "The Aquaman Shrine" it doesn't mean they have more insight than anyone else. A lot of these character-specific sites have been popping up lately claiming to be in-the-know on everything. In this case, guessing Mera, Orm, and Black Manta will be in an Aquaman movie is like low hanging fruit.

As for Momoa, he's finally beginning to talk about taking the Aquaman role, admitting to the crowd at Walker Stalker Con that the rumors were true all along and that he basically just had to keep his mouth shut about it.

Momoa:  "I was asked to play it. You know, you audition and stuff like that, but the fact is you've just got to keep it quiet. You know what I mean, I was just trying to respect Warner Bros. and everyone's wishes. I'm really, really happy that I don't have to be quiet anymore, because that's really hard for me."

It didn't seem that difficult, in fact he seemed to be having a lot of fun with it. But now that the cat is out of the bag, can Momoa reveal anything else about the film? Eh, not so much.

Momoa: "I don't know the director. I know about as much as you guys know. I know the Justice League will come first. That's really what we're going to focus on. I'm not sure if it will be [set] prior to Justice League or post. I don't know too much about it. It will probably be where he came from. It will probably be his whole origin story I would think... So I know we're going to do Justice League first."

Aquaman is set to open July 27th 2018.  [Comicbook.com]
