You may not know the Desiree Akhavan now but it may be a good time to get familiar. This past Sundance saw her directorial debut Appropriate Behavior turn a lot of heads for being unique amongst the festival pack. How does one go about that? Make your film about a Persian bisexual woman and her romantic escapades in Brooklyn.
The first trailer for Appropriate Behavior has arrived and the first thing that popped into my mind was Obvious Child, a comedy which also premiered at Sundance and has been praised for going in unexpected directions. Akhavan plays Shirin, a Persian woman trying to be a good daughter to her family while keeping her bisexuality hidden from them. She's also coping with a recent break-up and must navigate the confusing dating culture of New York. The film is already earning Akhavan some notices, too, including an Indie Spirit nomination for Best First Screenplay.
Appropriate Behavior opens in theaters and VOD on January 16th.
