'Birdman' Wins Best Feature at the Indie Spirits; Richard Linklater Earns Best Director
So they aren't really about indies anymore, or at least not like they used to be, but the 2015 Independent Spirit Awards took place tonight to honor those films we consider smaller than the rest. But for an indicator of how just how far things have changed, just note that the big winners tonight are likely to be the same winners tomorrow at the Oscars.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman took the most wins with three, including Best Feature, Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki, and Best Actor for Michael Keaton. Richard Linklater walked away with Best Director for Boyhood, while Patricia Arquette continued her run of dominance in the Best Supporting Actress category. The same can be said of Julianne Moore winning Best Actress for Still Alice, and JK Simmons' victory for Whiplash in the Best Supporting Actor category.
A couple of first-time filmmakers were honored as Dan Gilroy won Best First Feature and Best Screenplay for Nightcrawler, and Justin Simien's race comedy Dear White People won Best First Screenplay. Selma, which led with five nominations, came away with zero wins.
What does all of it mean for the Academy Awards? Probably nothing.
