Irrfan Khan and Omar Sy Join Tom Hanks in 'Inferno'
It's been six years since Ron Howard directed Angels & Demons, the sequel to his first adaptation of a Dan Brown novel, The Da Vinci Code. Considering they've combined to earn over $1B combined, that it took so long to get rolling on the third film, Inferno, is a bit of a surprise but finally Sony has confirmed production will begin in April. With the announcement also comes confirmation of the cast surrounding Tom Hanks, who of course will reprise his role as globe-hopping symbologist Robert Langdon.
Oscar-nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) has been confirmed after it was reported some months back. Also coming aboard are the great Irrfan Khan (The Namesake), Omar Sy (The Intouchables), and Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen), with the film due to hit theaters in 2016. Here's a synopsis taken from today's press release:
Inferno continues the Harvard symbologist’s adventures on screen: when Robert Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks, a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories and prevent a madman from releasing a global plague connected to Dante’s “Inferno.”
The Da Vinci Code got the franchise off to a hot start with $758M, but Angels & Demons cooled it back down with roughly $450M. That's not bad, obviously, but it remains to be seen if audiences still care about these movies or if they were just hyped over 'Da Vinci' which had an incredible amount of buzz at the time.
