Karl Urban Joins Disney's 'Pete's Dragon' Remake as Filming Begins

Filming has begun on Disney's live-action/CGI remake of Pete's Dragon, and while the principle cast was in place there is one new addition with Star Trek's Karl Urban coming aboard.

It appears he'll be taking on the role previously thought to be occupied by Michael C. Hall since he's not listed in the official press release. Urban joins stars Oakes Fegley, Oona Lawrence, Bryce Dallas Howard, Wes Bentley, and Robert Redford with David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints) directing and providing the screenplay. Here's a breakdown of the characters:

"The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard (“The Help”) as Grace, a park ranger who discovers the existence of Elliott; 10-year-old Oakes Fegley (“This is Where I Leave You”) as Pete; Wes Bentley (“The Hunger Games”) as Jack, a local mill owner; New Zealand native Karl Urban (“Star Trek Into Darkness”) as Jack’s brother, Gavin; Oona Laurence as Natalie, the young girl who befriends Pete; and Oscar® winner Robert Redford (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “All the President’s Men”) as Grace’s father."

A non-musical reimagining of the 1977 film, Pete's Dragon centers on an orphan boy who befriends a giant invisible dragon named Elliott. It's expected to hit theaters on August 12th 2016.
