The New Spider-Man May Not Be A White Guy

On the one hand, it makes sense that Sony would go with a Spider-Man most people are familiar with as they try to reestablish the franchise for the character's debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However the Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker experiment failed, and now Sony/Marvel may be looking to go in a completely different direction by going with the Miles Morales version of the character, who happens to be black.

According to Jeff Sneider at The Wrap, speaking on the Meet the Movie Press podcast, he suggests the next Spider-Man won't be white...

“Listen, this is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now, Spider-Man’s not gonna be white. Spider-Man is not going to be white … I am 95% sure. Spider-Man’s gonna be, most likely, black. But there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure, not white.”

The most recent rumors had Logan Lerman and Dylan O'Brien as the top contenders, but if Sneider is right that would obviously take them out of the running. The plan is to build the franchise around a younger actor who can fit in with a high school setting.  Sneider suggests the recent racism controversy that hit Sony during the leaked email scandal could play a part in this move. They may be trying to be the first to have a major black superhero franchise since the Blade films.
