Comic book fans will recognize the name Mike Carey as the Eisner Award-winning writer of Lucifer (now being turned into a TV series) and the longtime writer of X-men: Legacy. But he's also a novelist of some acclaim, and now his dystopian novel The Girl with All the Gifts is headed to the big screen with quite a cast attached.
Gemma Arterton (The Voices), Glenn Close (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Paddy Considine (The World's End) will star in She Who Brings Gifts, which will mark the directorial debut of Peaky Blinders' Colm McCarthy. Carey himself will adapt the novel which is set in a dystopian future when most of humanity has been infected by a fungus that causes them to lose mental control and devour human flesh. The rest of humanity live in heavily-guarded underground bunkers. This is where we find Melanie, a special little girl who has been infected but maintains a genius level IQ.
It's a great book, and completely different from your typical "zombie" story. Filming on She Who Brings Gifts begins in May. [Deadline]
