Jessie Usher to Lead 'Independence Day' Sequel; Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum Confirmed

Roland Emmerich's Independence Day sequel will be missing a key component when it opens next year: Will Smith. The actor passed on a chance to return as fighter pilot Steven Hiller, but that doesn't mean the character's family is off limits. While rumors had Michael B. Jordan eying a major role presumed to be that of Hiller's son, it turns out that role will be filled by another.

Jessie Usher, who appeared in the football drama When the Game Stands Tall, has snagged the lead role of Hiller's son. He'll be joined by Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum, who had been rumored but now have been confirmed by Emmerich himself. This is a big move for Usher, who currently features in the Starz Network series, Survivor's Remorse, which is produced by Lebron James.

Independence Day 2 opens June 28th 2016, and maybe it will do for Usher what the first film did for Will Smith.
