Matt Smith Rumored for Harry Potter Spinoff 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'

Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them may have Doctor Who as its lead magizoologist. Rumors have been swirling over the last couple of days that Smith is in the running to play Newt Scamander in the latest JK Rowling adaptation.

The story first emerged at UK rag, The Sun, so take it with a grain of salt. Warner Bros. is planning a new franchise, likely a trilogy, out of the story of magizoologist Newt Scamander, writer of the titular textbook owned by young Harry Potter. Filming would begin this summer with Steve Kloves and David Yates, writer and director of multiple 'Potter' films, working with Rowling on the screenplay.

If Warner Bros. hopes for filming to begin so soon we should begin hearing some solid casting news in the coming days. Smith will be seen next in Terminator Genisys where he'll have a very interesting role.
