Neill Blomkamp and Simon Kinberg Board Sci-Fi Project 'The Leviathan'

If you're an unknown filmmaker looking for a break, one good way to do it is exactly how Ruairi Robinson did it. There was an incredible amount of buzz last week for his short proof-of-concept video for The Leviathan, a sci-fi story set in the far flung future. That short got more than 2 million hits on Youtube and Vimeo, and apparently it also caught the attention of some serious heavy-hitters, like Simon Kinberg and Neill Blomkamp.

According to Deadline, Simon Kinberg has come aboard to produce The Leviathan, with Blomkamp serving as exec-producer. Kinberg has his feet firmly planted at 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm, working on the X-men, Fantastic Four, and Star Wars franchises. Blomkamp is the director of District 9, Chappie, and recently landed the gig directing an Alien sequel. So these are guys who can definitely get Robinson's project made, and likely at a big studio. The Leviathan is set in the 22nd century when faster-than-light travel has been made possible by harvesting from an exotic alien species.

This won't be Robinson's first feature, however. In 2013 he directed the low-budget sci-fi flick The Last Days on Mars. Whether he takes the reins for The Leviathan may depend on where the film ultimately lands.
