'Robotech' Takes Off as Sony Plans Live-Action Franchise

If there's one thing Sony is really short of right now it's franchises. They've just rebooted Spider-Man yet again and are looking at a Ghostbusters expanded universe, but that simply isn't enough because now they're planning to build a franchise out of the anime classic, Robotech.

Sony has picked up the rights to the cherished anime series from the 1980s with plans of building a live-action franchise. Michael Gordon, who adapted another childhood property in GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, will handle the script.  Those who have been following Robotech's long trek through Hollywood know many attempts have been made and all have failed. Warner Bros. has been trying to mount one for awhile, and recently had Nic Mathiu attached to direct, but it never took off. When the rights became available Sony swooped in like an invading Zentraedi to grab 'em.

Robotech became popular in the U.S. in the 1980s, but the truth is that the version we got was many different Japanese series edited and cut together. However it didn't detract from a sprawling story of humans who used futuristic technology to battle alien attackers. The series was known for two things: sprawling space battles and complicated human characters with complex relationships.
