'Weeds' Actor Mateus Ward Rumored for Marvel's Spider-Man

The most recent reports have Marvel rolling on Captain America: Civil War in the next couple of weeks, and if that's the case they need to get moving to find their next Spider-Man. The reason is that the webhead is expected to make a cameo as his official introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From there he'll star in his own solo film and also take part in Avengers: Infinity War. So this is a major gig, and while a few names have been rumored already, now we're about one who actually auditioned.

According to Badass Digest's source, 16-year-old actor Mateus Ward (Showtime's Weeds) has tested for the Peter Parker role. And yep, that's Peter Parker, not Miles Morales. Marvel doesn't seem to be ready to go in that direction just yet. Anyway, Ward's audition was meant to be super secret but nothing stays hidden for long. Or this story is bogus. Who can say? Agents sometimes put stories like this out there to drum up buzz for their clients. At least from an age perspective it would make sense. Sony and Marvel are looking for an actor who is truly a teenager and can grow into the role, and Ward definitely fits that criteria. He won't be 30-years-old trying to play a young kid, and that's something we've yet to see in a Spider-Man movie. This would also disqualify the previously-rumored Dylan O'Brien who is already 23-years-old.

Captain America: Civil War opens May 6th 2016. The solo Spider-Man film arrives July 28th 2017.
