Adam Sandler's 'Ridiculous 6' Causes Native American Actors to Walk Off Set

The downside of Adam Sandler's multi-picture deal with Netflix? You can no longer make an emphatic statement against his terrible movies by walking out of the theater. However the Native Americans on set of Sandler's new Netflix film, Ridiculous 6, have found another way to protest by walking off the set.

Twelve Native American actors, including the film's cultural advisor, have walked off the set of Ridiculous 6 due to the tremendous disrespect they were feeling due to the insulting screenplay which many perceive as racist. The script for the comedy Western, a spoof of The Magnificent Seven, called for women with names such as "No Bra" and "Beaver's Breath", and for them to squat and urinate while smoking a peace pipe. Basically, Sandler was taking a big fat dump on Apache culture in just about every way he could think of.

"They were being disrespectful," said actor David Hill, "They were bringing up those same old arguments that Dan Snyder uses in defending the (Washington) Redskins. But let me tell you, our dignity is not for sale."

"When I began doing this film, I had an uneasy feeling inside of me and I felt so conflicted. ... We talked to the producers about our concerns. They just told us, 'If you guys are so sensitive, you should leave,' " said Allison Young, a Navajo actress who left production.

Netflix has responded with this comment that probably isn't going to go over well...

The movie has ridiculous in the title for a reason: because it is ridiculous. It is a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of -- but in on -- the joke.

That doesn't really address concerns the film is racist. Netflix seems to be saying that if it's funny everything should be okay. Sandler hasn't been funny in ages so counting on that is probably a poor choice. [IndianCountry/Vulture]
