Expanding into wide release this weekend is Alex Garland's brilliant sci-fi film, Ex Machina, and if you read my review you know I think it was one of the year's best. Starring Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, and Alicia Vikander, it's essentially a three-hander about a young programmer enlisted by his eccentric tech-genius boss to perform the Turing Test on a sexy A.I. named Ava. It's a thinking man's movie, very big on ideas, but also has moments of tremendous levity. Those aren't quite so prevalent in the new trailer released today, however they become clear in the other video the folks at A24 dropped.
The studio wants you to pull a double feature this weekend by checking out Ex Machina and Noah Baumbach's While We're Young (also very good), so they've mashed up this footage from the films' big dance numbers. Both are hilarious on their own but are somehow even funnier this way, and I could watch Naomi Watts take a stab at hip-hop all day. Finally, you can check out Oscar Isaac and co-star Sonoyo Mizuno's moves as they were intended. Gleeson's astonished look is priceless.
