Brad Bird Admits Talks For 'Star Wars'; Gives Update on 'The Incredibles 2'

Brad Bird has done what few directors of animation have accomplished by making the successful move to live-action. The Incredibles and Ratatouille director took the helm for Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol and gave us the biggest (and best, in my opinion) chapter in the spy franchise. But could he be up for another major blockbuster, like Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars? Bird revealed to Collider that he's actually had some discussions with Kathleen Kennedy on just that possibility...

“Well Kathy and I have discussed the possibility of—I mean she’s basically saying this is a very large sandbox and other people can play in it. I was particularly attracted to the idea of picking up and—J.J. got very excited about the notion of shaping the next trilogy, and that idea was interesting to me too. But I kind of—I’m writing a sequel to The Incredibles and I can’t think too much farther beyond that. I have other things I want to do as well.”

So...maybe? There's still an opening out there for Star Wars: Episode IX which is to be written by Rian Johnson, plus Josh Trank just vacated the spinoff centered on Boba Fett. Either would be solid options for Bird if that's the direction he wants to go, and assuming those rumors about Joss Whedon aren't true

But first he has to complete work on The Incredibles 2, which he admitted to working on just last month. Is he fully committed to it as his next project, though? Sure sounds like it, saying "it feels like it to me, yeah." when asked about it. And it sounds like he's going to be using a number of ideas that simply couldn't fit in the first superhero movie...

“Oh yeah I have pages, a bunch of pages. I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie. I’m just focusing on getting Tomorrowland out into the world and playing with the Incredibles sandbox again.”

Bird's next film, Tomorrowland, opens May 22nd.
