The Devil has come to Los Angeles, and Fox turned it into just another police procedural. After announcing that Lucifer, based on the Vertigo Comics character created by Neil Gaiman, had been given a full season order, the network has revealed the first trailer, which actually turns out to be kind of fun.
Tom Ellis, late of the awful USA Network series Rush, plays Lucifer, who has given up his crown as the Lord of Hell in favor of Los Angeles, which is pretty Hellish in its own right. While he mingles with California's most beautiful people in his nightclub, Lucifer gets his kicks by helping LAPD detective Chloe Dance (Lauren German) solve crimes. Rachael Harris (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) plays his therapist, because even the devil has issues; Lesley-Ann Brandt (Spartacus) is his best friend Maze, who is very different from the comic book version of the character; and DB Woodside (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is Amanadiel, an angel who really wants Lucifer to return home.
Hopefully this turns out better than the recently-cancelled Constantine, another Vertigo adaptation with supernatural elements and a British lead.
Lucifer debuts on Fox next year.
