Phil Lord Talks 'The Flash' Movie and Which Version of the Character We'll See
With tonight's season finale of The Flash set to air on the CW, we're getting an update on the upcoming big-screen adventure of the scarlet speedster. A few weeks ago we learned The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street's Phil Lord and Chris Miller would be working on the story for the Justice Leaguer. With Ezra Miller (City Island) set to don the mask, there has still been some question which version of the character he'll play. Would they try to get some distance from the TV show by going in a different direction?
Lord appeared on The Hippojuice Podcast (there are too many podcasts, straight up) and revealed which version of The Flash we'll see, while also talking a little bit about the film's placement in the larger DC movie-verse....
“We’re trying to break a story,” says Lord. “It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright. …I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen. …We’re more trying to stick with the cinematic universe… iI really is its own thing and is kind of a stand-alone movie. We’re just trying to think of the best story. I think you guys will like it, it’s kind of a different take on superhero stuff. I’m optimistic!”
So we're getting Barry Allen and not Wally West or Bart Allen or whoever, and really this isn't a surprise. But it's interesting that Lord specifically addresses the TV series and seems to acknowledge some issues with making sure their Flash is different from what fans can see every single week. That he also suggests their film is somewhat separate from the DC movie universe is also worth noting, but we all know things will end up connected eventually. The Flash will certainly be appearing in the Justice League films directed by Zack Snyder, and may turn up elsewhere.
The Flash is currently set for March 23rd 2018.
