J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan is public domain, which is why you've got Joe Wright's Pan and Gary Ross' Peter and the Starcatchers film on the way. But most people know Peter Pan because of the 1950 Disney animated film, and if you knew they would eventually get around to making a live-action version of it then this whiff of fairy dust is for you. Reese Witherspoon is set to produce and star in Tink, which centers on Peter's fairy pal, Tinker Bell.
If this project sounds familiar that's because Elizabeth Banks was attached to it some years ago, but for various reasons it never took off. One problem is they were never able to find a director and there still isn't one, but Victoria Strouse (Finding Dory) is writing the screenplay. While plot details on this current version are still under wraps, it's said to be Tinker Bell's untold story, similar to Disney's Maleficent. Here's how Banks described the plot a few years ago, keeping in mind that things may have changed considerably...
“It’s a live action Tinkerbell movie sort of in the vein of Elf in which I would play Tinkerbell. Tinkerbell gets thrown out of Never Never Land, and it’s about where she goes and who she meets and the adventures she has….Tinkerbell is one of the greatest characters because she’s mischievous and snarky and fun and sexy and jealous and vengeful.”
She turned out to be prescient by adding "it might not even happen", and it certainly didn't with her aboard. But now with Witherspoon it looks to be the latest in Disney's long line of live-action remakes. [THR]
