Ben Wheatley's 'Free Fire' Adds Jack Reynor and Sam Riley as Filming Begins

Ben Wheatley isn't what one would call a mainstream sort of filmmaker. His prior films like Kill List, A Field in England, and Sightseers are way too far afield for most people, but I think we've seen him make a shift with the starry cast of High-Rise, which we should see in theaters later this year. And that trend towards more widely appealing projects seems to be continuing with Free Fire, which has begun filming and added a few new stars.

Joining the previously-cast Sharlto Copley, Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy and Michael Smiley are Sam Riley (Control), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction), Noah Taylor (The Double), Enzo Cilenti and Babou Ceesay. A crime thriller set in 1970s Boston, the film centers on a woman (Larson)  "who has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen (Murphy and Smiley) and a gang (led by Hammer and Copley) who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired in the handover, a heart-stopping game of survival ensues."

Martin Scorsese is exec-producing, which goes to show what this project has the potential to be. Maybe we'll see this at Sundance next year?
