Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep Fight for Equality in the New 'Suffragette' Trailer

Don't be surprised if the women's rights drama Suffragette is a major player this awards season. The simple truth of the matter is that women's rights issues are just as relevant today as they were back during the suffrage movement. And just as Selma brought a renewed focus to civil rights matters, we may see Suffragette have a similar impact. It also doesn't hurt to have a cast led by Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep.

A new full-length trailer has been released for the drama which centers on the women who were willing to risk everything to achieve equality. Here's the official synopsis:

SUFFRAGETTE is an intense drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement as they fought for the right to vote, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality - their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. The character of Maud, played by Carey Mulligan, is one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is both heart-breaking and inspirational.

Directed by Sarah Gavron and co-starring Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson, Romola Garai, Anne-Marie Duff, and Samuel West, Suffragette opens on October 23rd.
