With many already calling Rick Famuyiwa's Dope a modern day classic, it's no wonder Open Road is giving it such a massive push. Does it really need five separate trailers, though? Including today's new red band trailer, making it the second so far? Probably not if they want to keep the hip-hop-infused comedy's best jokes under wraps.
Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is so in love with '90s rap culture he still sports a high-top fade. Along with his two equally vintage friends, Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) and Jib (Tony Revolori), they try to survive the tough L.A. neighborhood known as "The Bottoms", but end up getting in the middle of a dangerous drug deal. If it all goes south, it could ruin Malcolm's hopes of getting into a good college.
Also starring A$AP Rocky, Zoe Kravitz, and Blake Anderson (who introduces the trailer), Dope hits theaters on June 19th. You can check out my Sundance review of it here.
