Jonathan Levine and Ted Melfi Top Contenders to Direct Marvel's 'Spider-Man' Film

While Marvel has narrowed down the search for their new Spider-Man to six candidates, there is also the matter of finding a director for Spidey's upcoming solo film. It appears those two searches are coming down to the wire at the same time, with Deadline reporting that the list of directorial candidates has been reduced to a select few.

The apparent frontrunners are Ted Melfi (St. Vincent) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), which makes sense considering both are fairly hot right now. Also in the mix are Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the duo behind the Vacation reboot and the writers of Horrible Bosses 2. That's not all, but a new contender has entered the picture in Jon Watts, director of B-movie thriller Cop Car starring Kevin Bacon.

There's also the question of who will write the script. When Drew Goddard was briefly attached it seemed a given he would pen the screenplay, too, but that's not so certain now with a different director on board. Then again, all of these finalists have writing experience and may pull double-duty as Shane Black did on Iron Man 3.

Whoever gets the job will direct the Spider-Man film, which may be titled The Spectacular Spider-Man or 'The New Avenger', for release on July 28th 217.
