Over the weekend America celebrated its independence, which made it a perfect time for the first teaser for Roland Emmerich's long-awaited sequel, Independence Day Resurgence. Jeff Goldblum revealed the ominous 12-second promo on his Facebook page, while the film's official site debuted one, as well. Neither shows any actual footage, just flickering backgrounds and the foreboding message: "We're fighting for our right to live. To exist."
Here's the film's official synopsis: We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
Independence Day Resurgence reunites Goldblum with original stars Brent Spiner, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch, and Bill Pullman. Newcomers to the cast include Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Sela Ward, and Maika Monroe. The film hits theaters next year on June 24th.
