Prince Charming to get a Live-Action Film at Disney

Disney continues to find new ways to cash in on classic fairy tales, many of which they've already turned into money-making animated hits. By refashioning them into live-action movies Disney has made blockbusters out of Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, and Cinderella with many more to come. And now you can add a Prince Charming movie to the list.

The Mouse House has picked up a script by Matt Fogel (an assistant to Phil Lord and Chris Miller on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) centering on Prince Charming, the dashing lead in practically every fairy tale ever. The archetypal character has appeared in everything from Sleeping Beauty to Cinderella to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.  Generally considered the perfect female fantasy, Prince Charming has been the subject of some darker twists on his personality. In the Vertigo comic book, Fables, Prince Charming is one man and essentially a cheating womanizer with a thing for princesses. Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen played sibling versions of the Prince in an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods, and they also prove to be less than faithful.

The version Disney is planning is described as "revisionist", meaning it could be similar to Maleficent by telling a familiar story from a different perspective. The Guardian suggests the project will actually be a comedy about Prince Charming's unlucky brother who lacks the same charm. No director is attached yet, but Prince Charming joins the The Jungle Book, Mulan, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Tink, Beauty and the Beast, and Alice Through the Looking Glass as upcoming live-action adaptations.
