Trailer for Jacques Audiard's Palm d'Or Winner, 'Dheepan'
It has been three years since Jacques Audiard's Rust & Bone, an emotionally tough film that was my top film of that year and remains a personal favorite. Audiard also directed A Prophet, and if there's anything he's known for it's elevating the uncommon problems of troubled people to an operatic degree. His latest film, Dheepan, was beloved by the jury at Cannes who awarded it the prestigious Palm d'Or, and now the first trailer for it has been released.
The story centers on Sivadhasan (Antonythasan Jesuthasan), a Tamil freedom fighter whose side loses the Sri Lankan Civil War, and so he decides to leave for France in hopes of gaining political asylum. But to do it he needs a cover story, so he forms a makeshift family with complete strangers and takes up residence in the Paris slums, where further conflict awaits.
Dheepan will open in France next month, but has yet to gain a U.S. date.
