Zack Snyder Again Justifies 'Man of Steel' Finale; Final Battle Drove Batman to Action

A couple of years after Zack Snyder's Man of Steel there are still a large number of people upset by the devastating, city-destroying, neck-snapping finale. They argue that Superman would never kill under any circumstances, a personal code of ethics seen mostly in the pages of his comic book. Snyder and screenwriter David Goyer, rightly in my opinion, justified it by stating that Superman's "no kill" policy needs to have a reason for existing. Something needs to happen to make him feel that way, and his lethal action against General Zod was the catalyst. Makes sense, but Snyder is still getting asked about it. Talking with EW about the central conflict within Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Snyder again defends his decision on such a conclusion...

“I was surprised because that’s the thesis of Superman for me, that you can’t just have superheroes knock around and have there be no consequences....There are other superhero movies where they joke about how basically no one’s getting hurt. That’s not us. What is that message? That’s it’s okay that there’s this massive destruction with zero consequence for anyone?"

The point being that Superman's actions are going to have a dramatic impact. While we understand that Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) will be one of those railing against the Kryptonian's existence, what's motivating Batman? The film is called 'Batman v Superman' for a reason, right? Ben Affleck reveals part of Bruce Wayne's motivation, and it goes back to Superman's actions having dire consequences...

“One of the things I liked was Zack’s idea of showing accountability and the consequences of violence and seeing that there are real people in those buildings. And in fact, one of those buildings was Bruce Wayne’s building so he knew people who died in that Black Zero event.”

So now we know they're calling the destructive Superman/Zod battle "Black Zero", a name that certainly won't be earning Superman any friends for awhile. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens March 25th 2016.
