Has Warner Bros. Cancelled Plans for a 'Man of Steel' Sequel?

As Warner Bros. fleshes out rather ambitious plans for their DC Comics universe, a big question mark continues to surround a sequel to Man of Steel. Sure, the Kryptonian has Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and will obviously star in both Justice League movies, but a true sequel to his own film has been left up in the air. While recent rumors have hinted George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) could take on the character, a new report casts a significant shadow over whether that will actually happen.

According to Den of Geek, Miller is indeed in talks with Warner Bros. about a superhero film to direct, but his choices are pretty wide open. Basically it depends on what most interests him, and whether or not he and the studio can come to terms on a vision for it, and whether schedules can be aligned. But as for a Man of Steel sequel, Miller probably won't do that because the film is on "permanent hold".

There wasn't any clarification about what that means, though. We weren't likely to see another solo Superman movie for a long time, anyway, given the already crowded slate that stretches into 2020. But the phrase "permanent hold" is in itself confusing. If it's on hold, then that means the hold will eventually be lifted, but permanent suggests cancellation. Maybe Den of Geek's source got their wording mixed up, but this is a situation that will hopefully be clarified soon.

It may be that Warner Bros. will focus their energies on a rumored trilogy of Batman movies, plus solo franchises involving Aquaman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Green Lantern.
