Matt Damon Says 'Bourne 5' Takes Place in a Post-Snowden World
A lot has changed since the last time Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass ventured into the world of Jason Bourne. For years they fought the idea of returning to the spy franchise, saying it would only be possible if the circumstances were exactly right and a good idea came along. Well now they're back, and with filming set to begin on the untitled film in a few days, Damon revealed to Buzzfeed what it was that brought him back.
The original three Bourne films were set in a very different political landscape than we're in currently, and part of Damon and Greengrass' decision to return was being able to put the agent in unfamiliar territory. Damon says...
“We always looked at those movies as really about the Bush presidency, and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change. “What does the character have to say? Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. “It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”
The questions of personal privacy vs. national security stretch well beyond our borders, and Damon revealed the film would begin in Greece and have a huge finale in Las Vegas.
Joining Damon are Julia Stiles, who is reprising her role as Nicky Parsons, plus Tommy Lee Jones and Alicia Vikander. Just don't expect to see Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, the character that led The Bourne Legacy while Damon was away. There's still the chance both brainwashed agents could cross paths down the line.
The fifth Bourne film opens on July 29, 2016
