'The Maze Runner' Director Wes Ball goes Mythological with 'Fall of Gods'

Wes Ball's directorial career got off to a better start than anyone could have hoped, and that includes his bosses at 20th Century Fox. Ball directed The Maze Runner, which turned out to be last year's biggest YA success story outside of The Hunger Games, and next month he'll be behind the anticipated sequel, The Scorch Trials. Fox, evidently keen on keeping him in the fold, have already lined up another massive project for Ball, as he'll be directing Norse mythological tale, Fall of Gods.

Fox has scooped up the rights to Fall of Gods, created by conceptual designer Rasmus Berggreen out of his Denmark-based MOOD Visuals. Described as an "epic Norse fantasy", the book was written by Michael Vogt, while the film will be produced by Ball, Steve Tzirlin (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), and Joe Hartwick Jr. Here's a synopsis for the book from its Kickstarter page:

The gods have long ago vanished. In their place, two rivaling races now inhabit Midgard; humans and jotnar. Fifteen years ago, a coalition of chieftains drove the jotnar race from Midgard. Now, from each side of the border, humans and jotnar eye each other with hatred and suspicion.

When his wife, the estranged daughter of one of Midgard’s most powerful chieftains, is mysteriously kidnapped, a retired warrior takes up the hatchet and sets out to rescue her. But he risks unleashing the wild demon buried deep within him and losing his soul in the process. His journey will bring him into conflict with terrible forces as a cynical plot is revealed and the dark mythological past of the North begins to awaken once more.

This is still pretty early days as the project has yet to nail down a screenwriter. So presumably this won't interfere with Ball likely directing a third installment of the Maze Runner series. [THR]

A small teaser... Some day it would be cool to have the whole story with animated illustrations :) https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/120302834/fall-of-gods
