Ron Perlman Talks "Amazingly Theatrical' 'Hellboy 3' Plot
Each year the prospects of a third Hellboy movie grow dimmer, but that hasn't stopped people from asking about it. Just last year Guillermo Del Toro himself said it was "unlikely" to ever happen for a variety of reasons, and certainly there hasn't been any movement on it since. But star Ron Perlman continues to talk about what would have been the final leg of the crimson demon's story, which would pick up after Hellboy II: The Golden Army's finale in which he learns he's about to be the father of twins.
While talking with Empire about his role in Amazon series, Hand of God, Perlman revealed a great deal about Del Toro's planned storyline for a third film, and exactly what's up with those twins...
“The two twins: one would look like the mum and one would look like the dad. And one of them was going to be completely f*cking corrupt, the other one angelic. Which one was which? Only Guillermo would make the f*cked-up-looking one be the angel. So then that adds to the saga.”
As if fatherhood wasn't enough pressure for Hellboy to deal with, there's also that little problem of him being a harbinger of the apocalypse. Del Toro had a pretty big idea for that, too, according to Perlman...
“Holy sh*t, he’s the beast of the Apocalypse. He has to take down civilization. He has to. It’s non-negotiable. That’s the foundation for the story, and that’s why I think it would be a shame if we don’t do it."
Perlman has long expressed a desire to see the trilogy through to its conclusion, but he admits that it probably won't happen, which is cool with him because he's not up for wearing all that make-up again...
“I really feel as though I’m done with the character. I don’t have a burning desire to put that sh*t on again. But Guillermo told me what the resolve of the trilogy would look like, in broad strokes, and it’s such an amazingly theatrical, cinematic idea, that I found it essential that we do it. We were designed to be a trilogy, with a beginning, a middle and an end. We’ve only done two-thirds, so I feel that we’re not really done until we finish it.”
Neither Hellboy film made a ton of money and had sizable budgets for a character many were unfamiliar with. But these movies have a large cult following, perhaps because they are so different from what Marvel and Warner Bros. are doing, and the cry for one more Hellboy movie probably won't end soon.
