Russell Crowe to Star in Survival Drama 'In Sand and Blood'

After making his directorial debut with the modest post-war drama, The Water Diviner, Russell Crowe is ready for another desert epic. According to Variety he will star in the survival drama In Sand and Blood, an adaptation of Dean King’s nonfiction book Skeletons on the Zahara: A True Story of Survival.

Penned by Ronan Bennett (Public Enemies) and directed by Saul Dibb (The Duchess), the story is based on the true story of an American sea captain and his crew who are tortured and enslaved by African natives after being shipwrecked off the coast of the Sahara in 1815.  The book was released in 1817 and was recognized by Abraham Lincoln as a text that inspired him most.

No word on when filming begins but Crowe has already begun his own research, tweeting this image a few days ago...
