Amy Sherman-Palladino Returning for 'Gilmore Girls' Revival at Netflix
When Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino would talk about concluding her popular mother/daughter series she would hint at the four final words that she had always envisioned for it. Well, that never got to happen because she and husband Daniel left before the final season due to failed contract negotiations with The CW network. That final season, frankly, didn't feel like Gilmore Girls to many of the show's fans who have kept up a quiet push for some kind of revival. Well, they're finally about to get exactly what they wanted.
Netflix is reportedly reviving Gilmore Girls as four 90-minute episodes that will allow Sherman-Palladino to wrap things up Lorelai and Rory's story exactly how she intended. Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are both expected to return, along with Kelly Bishop and Scott Patterson, although negotiations with them are only just beginning. Sadly, Edward Hermann who played daddy Richard Gilmore passed away last year. Hopefully his death is acknowledged in the episodes somehow.
While the number of pointless TV revivals continues to be annoying, Gilmore Girls is one that actually makes sense. In this case, the series went off the rails due to something fans could give a shit less about; contracts. So giving them the ending they would have received is a pretty cool gesture by Netflix. Sherman-Palladino has admitted to not watching any of the season 7 episodes, which is fine because fans probably want her to ignore them anyway.
I was a big fan of Gilmore Girls for a few years, admittedly because I had fallen deeply in love with Alexis Bledel's eyes and Lauren Graham in tight jeans. But the writing, especially the whip smart dialogue between Lorelai and Rory is what kept me around, and hopefully Sherman-Palladino can recapture what made that show so good. No word yet on whether Melissa McCarthy will have time to reprise her role as Sookie, or if they'll do me a solid and have Milo Ventimiglia's Jess killed off-screen.
Meanwhile there's yet another reunion on the way for Graham as she's pairing up with Parenthood co-star Mae Whitman for an adaptation of The Royal We. Based on the book by Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks, which will be adapted by Graham herself, the story centers a regular American girl next door who falls in love with the future king of England while studying at Oxford. Cue the tabloid headlines. No word on a director yet but the film comes from CBS Films, the studio behind Whitman's surprisingly robust teen comedy, The Duff.
