Big Trouble for Marvel's 'Inhumans' Movie and 'Iron Fist' TV Series?
New York Comic-Con took place over the weekend and while it's not what I would call a hot bed of movie news, a couple of big Marvel rumors emerged that have caused a ruckus. Bleeding Cool got things going with a story on Marvel's Inhumans film, stating that it was now completely off the schedule despite a 2019 release date capping off Phase 3. Why? Well that's where things get interesting.
According to their report it all has to do with the war brewing between Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige and CEO Ike Perlmutter, who oversees the TV side of things.. You may recall that a few weeks ago Feige got out from under Perlmutter's purview and now reports directly to Disney. Well, Feige apparently doesn't dig all of the Inhumans stuff happening on Agents of SHIELD, and rather than see any of that impact a future film he's decided to scrap it, or "de-prioritise it. Let it fall down the soldiers until, eventually, it’s said that they could never find the right people for it." The Inhumans film is said to have been announced as part of Phase 3 only because Perlmutter demanded it, but he no longer has sway on that side of the business.
Okay, so this is pretty huge, but is any of it true? Well, Hitfix has what they call an "unimpeachable source" who say an Inhumans is definitely still happening, and there are certain story points that are completely off-limits to Agents of SHIELD. Who to believe? It's hard to say, but if Feige really did pull a jack-move on Perlmutter by cancelling Inhumans that would be crazy. It's worth noting that Bleeding Cool tends to look at things from a pro-Perlmutter perspective, while Hitfix is generally solid when it comes to reporting on this stuff.
But that's not the only thing Marvel TV is struggling with. A few months ago there was a story claiming Marvel and Netflix were having trouble figuring out the Iron Fist series, and now they may be getting interfered with by Marvel Studios. Feige and Co. still have "say and a signoff into how the show appear and the word is the show may be killed with such procedural notes." Furthermore, some Marvel staffers closely tied with Perlmutter could be getting the axe soon.
Such open hostility is a rare thing nowadays and hardly seems likely for the well-oiled Marvel machine. That said, it's probably a good idea to take all of this with a grain of salt. Some, all, or absolutely none of these rumors could turn out to be true. The best way to find out is to simply wait and see if Inhumans or Iron Fist actually happen.
