Box Office: 'Goosebumps' Takes #1 with Hair-Raising $23.5M

1. Goosebumps (review here)- $23.5M
Goosebumps made the most of the Halloween season by opening with a strong $23.5M, knocking The Martian off its perch after a few weeks. The film is an adaptation of R.L. Stine's popular line of teen horror books which have been around for years, with Jack Black hamming it up as the author himself. The film opened in an interesting position as the family comedy went opposite Guillermo Del Toro's much starrier Gothic horror, Crimson Peak; but also opened early enough to beat out the rash of found-footage films on the way.
2. The Martian- $21.5M/$143.7M
3. Bridge of Spies (review here)- $15.3M
The latest historical drama from Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, Bridge of Spies, opened at $15.3M. That's not bad for a mature, Cold War-era spy film that isn't about cool gadgets and blowing stuff up. When these two team up their films usually do well over long stretches, just look at Saving Private Ryan and Lincoln, and the expectation is this will perform similarly.
4. Crimson Peak (review here)- $12.8M
In the "massive disappointment" category falls Guillermo Del Toro's Crimson Peak, which opened with a dismal $12.8M. When you consider that practically every cheapie found-footage genre flick debuts much bigger than that, this opening is especially bad. Not even the star wattage of Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam, and Mia Wasikowska, not to mention Del Toro himself, could get audience attention and that usually means something went wrong in the marketing. Perhaps it was Del Toro's insistence his film was a romance rather than a horror, but whatever the reason this isn't good and could have an effect on whether he is given the okay to direct Pacific Rim 2.
5. Hotel Transylvania 2- $12.2M/$136.4M
6. Pan- $5.8M/$25.7M
With reports swirling that Joe Wright's Pan could lose Warner Bros. $150M when all is said and done, the film spiraled 62% in week two.
7. The Intern- $5.4M/$58.7M
8. Sicario- $4.5M/$34.6M
9. Woodlawn- $4.1M
The inspirational football drama Woodlawn opened at $4.1M, which is excellent for only 1533 theaters. The people behind this film found similar success recently with Mom's Night Out and the abortion drama, October Baby, so clearly they've found an audience receptive to the stories they wish to tell.
10. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials- $2.7M/$75.4M
