Edgar Wright, Johnny Depp, and Bret McKenzie Teaming for Neil Gaiman's 'Fortunately, the Milk'
Some years back Edgar Wright of Shaun of the Dead had been looking to team up with Johnny Depp on an adaptation of The Night Stalker for Disney, but that project never seemed to get off the ground and Wright moved on to Ant-Man (for a while), before taking on Baby Driver full-time. Now he and Depp may finally have that chance to work together on an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's time-travel book, Fortunately, The Milk.
As if the combination of Gaiman, Depp, and Wright didn't promise enough crazy, it gets even better with Bret McKenzie (The Muppets, Flight of the Conchords) co-writing the screenplay and The Lego Movie's Animal Logic acting as producers for the live-action/animation hybrid. Wright would be directing while Depp would produce and star. Gaiman's book featured beautiful illustrations by Skottie Young and centers on a father of two kids who goes out to get some milk and ends up in a bizarre adventure across time and space. The story was told from the perspective of the children as they listen to their father's wild tale.
Gaiman, who has long been my favorite author, has always been a popular target for Hollywood adaptations but it seems to have reached another level lately. The Coraline and Stardust author has an adaptation of How to Talk to Girls at Parties on the way from John Cameron Mitchell (Shortbus); Ron Howard is attached to finally bring The Graveyard Book to the screen; Joseph Gordon-Levitt is adapting his seminal comic Sandman; while his acclaimed novel American Gods is headed to television.
