Ben Affleck Talks Directing Solo Batman Film, New 'Batman v Superman' Trailer Teased, Plus 'Wonder Woman' Rumors
The desire to learn every single detail of a film like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is overwhelming, but something I don't totally understand. The last few days have seen a ton of information, some extremely spoilery, about the film thanks to various cast interviews and Total Film's latest issue. In fact, Henry Cavill has gone ahead and given away the film's opening sequence. which you can find here. There's still plenty of information available that doesn't give everything away, including the likelihood of Ben Affleck directing Batman's first solo film since Christopher Nolan's trilogy.
Last summer word broke that Affleck was co-writing with Geoff Johns the next Batman movie with an eye towards directing it. While he's still not officially confirmed, it does seem as if he really wants to do it as long as there's time.
“If I could make it work, yeah, Obviously that would be like a dream. The trick is, as to any movie, is to make sure that you – if you’re going to direct it – that you can make it good. You’ve got to have the right idea and the right take on it… Broadly speaking, it’s something I’d be open to, for sure. It’s a very exciting idea.”
The problem, of course, is Affleck's schedule, and producer Charles Roven isn't totally sure things can be worked out.
"He’s got a busy schedule, he’s about to start a movie now. And he’s also got obligations to be in the Justice League movie. The calendar is a little bit tricky. Of course, the script obviously has to be worthy of him wanting to direct it, and once that happens, it’s still got to fit into the calendar. We’re hoping we can make it happen. We’re just at the beginning of the question."
Meanwhile, Zack Snyder is teasing that a new 'Batman v Superman' trailer could be arriving soon. It could possibly arrive ahead of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 2, Spectre, or another major blockbuster release over the next few weeks. He also gave a few minor details on the new Batmobile...
"You know it has all the kind of fun stuff. It has the countermeasures — we always talk about the countermeasures because people are like, ‘What the heck is countermeasures?’ You know if I shot a missile at it, flares would pop out of those holes and stop the missile from hitting it… So that’s fun. It’s got this crazy gun [on the front part of the vehicle]. It’s super-fast. It’s electrified. It can do all the other Bat-car stuff. But the cool thing I liked about it is that it’s a purpose built Batmobile, right? Which is kind of fun to get back to that.”
Looking forward, Batman and Superman aren't the only Justice Leaguers with their own solo movies. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) has one coming in 2017 directed by Patty Jenkins. There have been multiple rumors about where the film fits in exactly, with the dominant theory that will cover three distinct time periods, and a new report from Joblo backs that up a little. They say the film will take place during WWII and the modern era, the latter featuring villains Circe and Ares as they try to launch WWIII. Eva Green and Sean Bean have been mentioned for those roles but at this point nothing is concrete. Wonder Woman is being positioned to be the "Thor" of the DC Universe, which seems like the right way to go given her deep mythological roots.
